BQ Role: Assist with business case
Proposal Stage of Development: Business case underway
Date of Publication: June 2016 (for the period 3 December 2015 – 3 June 2016)
Growth in Queensland’s audience for live theatre has increased demand from local, national and international companies to stage mid-sized and large-scale productions in Brisbane. The Queensland Performing Arts Centre (QPAC) is currently the only fit-for-purpose venue able to host major musicals and theatrical productions—while also providing a dedicated venue for Queensland’s home companies—and is at near maximum capacity utilisation.
As a result, there is a need to consider an additional, suitably sized performing arts venue in Brisbane to cater for this demand.
The proposal is focused on the delivery of a new performing arts venue which can support the growth of Queensland’s performing arts sector, cater for national and international touring productions and other users, as well as leverage existing infrastructure and cultural and entertainment precincts.
Preparation of the business case to assess potential sites is currently underway, with the delivery of funding and operating models under investigation (including the potential for private sector involvement to support value-for-money outcomes). Market sounding and stakeholder consultation will be undertaken as part of this process.
